Zearalenone is a mycotoxin produced as a secondary metabolite of various Fusarium fungi. Zearalenone is known to cause estrogenic effects at relatively low levels, including infertility, reduced serum testosterone levels and sperm counts, reduced incidence of pregnancy, and change in progesterone levels. In addition, Zearalenone can delay the breeding process and cost the producer significant economic and physical losses.
In Europe, Regulation (EC) 1881/2006 sets maximum levels for Zearalenone in foodstuffs such as processed cereal-based food and baby foods at 20µg/Kg.

Zearalenone analysis has been carried out on maize (41µg/Kg), rice (41µg/Kg) and cereal-based baby food (10 and 41µg/Kg). Very simple and clean chromatograms were obtained after a clean up with AFFINIMIP® SPE Zearalenone.

This method uses a very quick sample preparation by simply diluting corn oil in a solvent before cleanup. Cleanup with AFFINIMIP®SPE Zearalenone provides clear and unambiguous results at a broad range of concentration levels. The tests performed demonstrate high recovery yields with a low background.
The combination of AFFINIMIP® SPE Zearalenone cartridges with an automate GILSON GX-271 ASPEC™ shows accurate and reliable analysis with recovery yields higher than 80% on a wheat sample.
